Obituary for Richard Douglas 'Rick' Carter

Richard Douglas (Rick) Carter, age 60, of 123 Timberlane Drive, a popular and well-known Americus businessman, passed away Saturday, December 27, 2014, at his residence. He was the son of the late I.F. (Bud) Carter and is survived by his mother, LaVerne Avant Carter. He was born June 13, 1954 in Heidelberg, Germany where his father was stationed while serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. In his pre-teen years, he was a member of the Optimist Club’s Boys’ Choir. Having developed a love for music in his teen years, he took guitar lessons and then organized a Band composed of himself and his school classmates who had musical instruments. He was a 1972 graduate of Southland Academy and in 1977 graduated from Georgia Southwestern College where he earned a degree in Business Administration. At Georgia Southwestern College, he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity and participated in their activities, especially favoring the “Walk for Mankind” program. It was in his nature to never pass up an opportunity to help someone if he could. He owned and operated Carter Office Equipment Company until he closed it in 2013 to retire for health reasons. During that phase of his life, he had joined Georgia Office Products Association where he had served on the Board of Directors and had also served as Membership Chairman. Rick was a member of Lee Street United Methodist Church and loved his God, his family, his neighbors, his friends and was always happy when he made a new friend. “Other things”, he said, “just fits in the picture somewhere”. He was generally referring to his love of gardening and flying having earned his Pilot’s license in April of 2001. However, he had other interests throughout his life such as watching car races, restoring classic cars and in later life, working around his home, riding his motorcycle on country roads, maintaining his yard and garden and sharing his vegetables with neighbors and friends. Survivors include his wife, Joy Patrice Collins Carter of Americus; his three sons, Brent Carter, Harold Carter and Chad Carter; his mother, LaVerne Carter; and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Alyene and Malloy Culpepper of Cordele. He was preceded in death by his father, I. F. 'Bud' Carter. Funeral services will be held Monday, December 29, 2014 at 2:00 PM at Lee Street United Methodist Church with Rev. Betty Lou Miller officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at 1:00 PM in the Social Hall of the church. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Phoebe Sumter Hospice of Americus, P. O. Box 1434, Americus, Ga. 31709; Lee Street United Methodist Church, 1102 S. Lee St., Americus, Ga. 31709; Magnolia Manor League of the Good Samaritan, 2001 S. Lee St., Americus, Ga. 31709 or a charity of one’s choice.
