Obituary for Rebecca Ann Arnold Ray

Rebecca “Becky” Anne Arnold Ray, 74, passed away Monday morning, July 2, 2012, at Phoebe Putney Hospital in Albany from an unexpected illness. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 5, at the First United Methodist Church, Americus. The Reverend Jim Smith will officiate. Internment will follow at the Armstrong United Methodist Church Cemetery near Auburn, Alabama at 5:00 p.m. (CT). The family will not have formal visitation, but friends may come by the home of Robert and Kathy Parks, 167 Parkers Mill Creek Road in Americus. Born August 9, 1937, in Smithville, Ga., Becky was the daughter of the late Herman Bunn Arnold and Helen Rebecca Lyle Arnold Gibbs. For the majority of her life, Americus was her home. Becky graduated from Americus High School in 1955 and attended Georgia Southwestern College and Auburn University where she obtained Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Elementary Education. While at Auburn, she met the love of her life and married, James Dubberley Ray, Jr. of Auburn Al., who preceded her in death. Her residence was known to be Americus as she considered Saint Simons Island to be home as well. A son, James Dubberley Ray, III also preceded her passing. Rebecca Anne Arnold Ray was known to live life to the fullest enjoying family, friends, travel, and any reason to have a celebration. A devout Christian and servant to her Heavenly Father, she was a long-time member and servant of First United Methodist Church in Americus where she volunteered in every capacity needed as teacher or leader, where she most recently was serving as Past President of United Methodist Women and former member of the Administrative Council. As well as serving her church, she believed in supporting her community and those in need always offering a hand working as a mentor, on many community projects, and in various organizations. Becky was a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority, past president of the Americus Junior Service League, a past board member of the American Cancer Society and active member and officer of the Americus Town Committee of The National Society of Colonial Dames of America in The State of Georgia. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Kathleen Rebecca Ray Parks and Robert Gene Parks of Americus; Caroline Virginia Ray Johnson and Mark David Johnson of Saint Simons Island, Ga.; a sister and brother-in-law, Bunny Arnold Glover and Charles Gary Glover of Valdosta, Ga.; sister-in-law, Jerusha Ray Whitaker of Augusta, Ga.; and six grandchildren, Jordan Rebecca Parks and Caroline Elizabeth Parks of Americus; James Dubberley Ray Johnson, Mark David Johnson, Jr., Lucy Virginia Johnson and Leyton Meriwether Johnson, all of Saint Simons Island, Ga. A number of nieces, nephews and cousins, as well as her many dear friends, also survive. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to impact the lives of others through these organizations–First United Methodist Church, 200 S.
