Obituary for Millard Franklin Simmons

Millard Franklin Simmons, age 88, of 211 Thomas St., Plains, died at his residence Friday, July 5, 2013. A native of Albany, he was born November 30, 1924, the son of the late Mack Parda and Virda Ruth Tyson Simmons. Mr. Simmons served in the Navy during World War II where he was a gunner on the first wave at Normandy. His brother, M.P. Simmons was killed on the beach of Normandy. Mr. Simmons was in the Battle of Okinawa and Iwo Jima and blew up mines off the coast of China. He was also credited with shooting down two Japanese planes. Mr. Simmons was a retired Postmaster and was a member of Plains United Methodist Church. Graveside services will be held Sunday, July 7, 2013, at 4:00 PM at Lebanon Cemetery with Rev. Dwight Bishop officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday, July 6, 2013, from 5:00 until 7:00 PM at Greg Hancock Funeral Chapel. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Plains United Methodist Church, 301 W. Church St., Plains, GA. 31780. Survivors include his wife, Anne B. Simmons of Plains; a son and daughter-in-law, Mill and Gloria Simmons of Plains; two grandchildren, Rhett and Jessie Simmons of Americus and Paige Simmons of Macon; a great-grandchild, Milly Simmons of Americus; three nieces, Victoria Bagwell Kelley, Peggy Jordan and Lynn Jones Hudson;a nephew, Brad Bagwell; and two caregivers, Annie Bryant and Georgia King.
