Obituary for James Albra West

James Albra West passed away at the age of 93 on Monday, January 27, 2020, in Americus. Born January 12, 1927, in York county, Maine, he was the son of John E. West and Argie Littlefield West. His brothers and sisters and their spouses (all deceased) were Randolph and Olive West, Donald and Eleanor West Tilton, and Harold and Althea West Jacobs.
Jim graduated from the University of Maine with a degree in Agronomy and was inducted in Alpha Zeta honorary fraternity. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, serving in Japan. Afterwards he began a career with the U.S Department of Agriculture, serving in Long Island, NY; Winter Haven, FL; Monterey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico; and Harlingen, TX. Upon retirement in 1983, he moved to Columbus, GA., and later to Americus, where he was an active member of Americus First United Methodist Church.
Jim was an avid gardener and enjoyed hiking, playing bridge, following the Atlanta Braves, and traveling in all 50 states and many foreign countries. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Edith Maxalene Mingledorff West of Americus, nieces, Donna Tilton McGorrill of Maine, Jean Tilton Fox and husband Earl Fox of Maine, and Kathy West Barbay and husband Bert Barbay of California, nephews, John Jacobs and friend Henrietta Ponds of Arizona/Oregon and Dorian Jacobs and wife Wendy Jacobs of Florida/Maine.
Memorial Service of Jim will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, February 8, 2020, in the Chapel of Magnolia Manor. The family will receive friends in the chapel following, the service. Interment will follow at a late date in Douglas, Ga. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to, The League of the Good Samaritan, 2001 S.
