Obituary for Harry Wendell Thompson

Harry Wendell Thompson, age 86, of 603 Commerce St., Leslie, died at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center Tuesday, November 29. A native of Americus, Mr. Thompson was born May 25, 1925, the son of the late Russell Samuel and Lavalia Peavy Thompson. Mr. Thompson served in the U.S. Navy during World War II; was a member of MB Council Lodge # 13 F & AM where he was a 33 degree Mason, York Rites and Chairman of the Advisory Council for Demolay. He enjoyed being a clown with the Shriner's and was also a member of American Legion, Sons of Confederate Veterans and National LSM Association. Mr. Thompson was retired from Bell South where he was last employed as a Toll Tech. Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 1, 2011 at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Greg Hancock Funeral Chapel with Rev. Hugh DeLoach officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence of Ray and Rhoda Thompson, 967 Leslie Lamar Rd., Leslie. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Masonic Children’s Home, 1417 Nottingham Dr., Macon, Ga. 31211-1399. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Marie Liles Thompson of Leslie; a son, Joe Thompson of Columbus; two sisters, Virginia Williams of Columbus and Joyce Stovall of Tallahassee, FL; two brothers and sister-in-law, Ernest R. Thompson of Gardena, CA and Ray and Rhoda Thompson of Leslie. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Emory, Braxton and an infant brother.
