Obituary for Evelyn J Smith

Mrs. Evelyn Jennings Smith, age 94, of Americus died April 2, 2010, at Magnolia Manor Nursing Center. A lifelong resident of Sumter County, Mrs. Smith was born December 3, 1915 the daughter of the late Phillip David and Mamie Thomas Jennings of Plains. She was employed as a nurse at the old City Hospital, Manhatten Shirt Company, Gertrude Davenport and retired from Americus Hardware Company. After retirement, she became a sitter as it was her nature to nurture and care for people. Mrs. Smith was an active member of First Baptist Church of Americus most of her life and was a member of Ladies Bible Class as long as her health permitted.
A memorial service will be held graveside Saturday, April 3, 2010, at 2:00 PM, at Sunset Memorial Gardens with Rev. Rusty Mauldin officiating. Survivors include two sons; Morris B. and Willene Smith, Jr. and Pete P. and Dot Smith all of Americus; a grandson, Morris (BoBo) B. Smith III, of Ellaville; five granddaughters, Marci and Rick Langley of Albany, Mandi S. Walls of Americus, Hope and Don Deriso of Americus, Amy S. Davis of Eastman and Kerri and Bo Ewing of Americus; eight great- grandchildren; Ivy and Addison Walls, Becca Lane, Christopher Smith, Morgan and Maci Deriso, Chandler Davis and Savannah Grace Ewing; two sisters, Betty J. Moses of Peachtree City and Hortense J. Williams of Jacksonville, Fl.; two brothers, Gene and Babs Jennings of Montgomery, Al. and Burr Wise Jennings of Americus; a sister-in-law, Thelma S. McMichael of Americus and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Morris Broughton Smith, Sr.; three brothers, Phillip and June Jennings, Jack and Eola Mae Jennings and Thomas and Barnette Jennings; one sister-in-law, Emogene P. Jennings; two sisters, Annie Laurie J. and George Moore and Margaret J. and L.B. Johnson and three brothers-in-law, Hubert Windham, Jack Moses and Jimmy Williams.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Americus and Sumter County, P.O. Box 1434, Americus, Ga. 31709, First Baptist Church, 221 S. Lee St., Americus, Ga. 31709, The Georgia Sheriffs Boys Ranch, P.O. Box 1000, Stockbridge, Ga. 30281, The League of the Good Samaritan, 2001 S Lee St., Americus, Ga. 31709 or a charity of ones choice.

Sunset Memorial Gardens

The family will receive friends at the home of Morris and Willene Smith, 1702 S. Lee St., Americus and also Pete and Dot Smith, 2437 S. Lee St., Americus.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, April 3, 2010, from the graveside at Sunset Memorial Gardens
