Obituary for Claude Bearden Speer

Claude Bearden Speer, age 85, of Americus passed away Friday afternoon at Magnolia Manor. Born July 10, 1923, he had resided in the same house in which he was born.
After graduating from Georgia Southwestern College in 1942, he had worked at Churchwells Department Store, Dairy Co., Inc., and Harold Brothers Cotton Warehouse. In the late 1950s, Mr. Speer came back to Georgia Southwestern College and served in various capacities around campus until 1977. It was at GSW that he found his second home as he personally met and knew by name hundreds of students through the years even after his retirement.
As a member of First Baptist Church, he had served as a Sunday School teacher for many years and as an Adult Scout Leader in Troop 26 of the Boy Scouts of America which is sponsored by First Baptist. He also was a sponsor of the Baptist Student Union at GSW, member of the Peace Officers Association of Georgia, Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity, and the Sons of Confederate Veterans.
Mr. Speer, even though not having many close relatives, was a wealthy man in the respect to the number of friends he had cultivated through the years. Many a young man shot his first gun or drove his first car under Mr. Speers watchful eyes.
Graveside services will be held in Oak Grove Cemetery at 2 PM on Sunday, March 29, 2009 with Rev. Keith Parks and Rev. Rusty Mauldin officiating. All Boy Scouts, past and present, are asked to serve as honorary pallbearers.
Anyone desiring to do so, can make contributions in Mr. Speers name to Troop 26 at the First Baptist Church of Americus. As an old friend once said, as the days fly past, will we lose our grasp or fuse it in the sun. Today Mr. Speer has fused his relationship with his Lord in Heaven and is walking the Streets of Gold. He will be forever missed by his friends who remain behind.
