Obituary

Roy Gatian, Jr., age 78, of 2009 Rose Ave., died at Magnolia Manor Nursing Home, Thursday, July 14, 2011. A native of Rosemont, WV., he was born March 6, 1933, the son of Roy Anthony and Stella Boggs Gatian, Sr. He was a retired physical therapist and was employed at Southwestern Rehab. Mr. Gatian served in the Army during the Korean Conflict. He established the first physical therapy department at Americus Sumter County Hospital, Magnolia Manor, Palmyra Park Hospital and Easter Seals of Albany. He then established his own rehabilitation business in Americus. Mr. Gatian was editor of the APTA Geriatric Section Newsletter. He was a Scout leader for the disabled scouts in Union Town, PA. and Scout leader of the Medical Explorers Post in Americus. He enjoyed baseball, riding motorcycles, camping and his family. A memorial service will be held Sunday, July 17, 2011, at 1:30 PM at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Father Martino Nguyen officiating. The family will receive friends at the family residence, 2009 Rose Ave., each day until the service from noon until 8:00 PM. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Magnolia Manor Nursing Home, 2001 S. Lee St., Americus, Ga. 31709; Phoebe Sumter Medical Center, 1048 E. Forsyth St., Americus, Ga. 31709 or the Sumter Humane Society, 108 Industrial Blvd., Americus, Ga. 31709. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Michelle and Ben Andrews of Americus and Renee and Winn Bearden of Americus; a son and daughter-in-law, Doug and Rosalind Gatian of Americus, a sister and brother-in-law, Judith and Jim Wolfe of Eddyville, KY; a brother, Richard Gatian of Morgantown, WV.; six grandchildren and two step grandchildren, Rachel and Jeff Dorsey, Roxanne and Justin Paramore, Ben Andrews III., Michelle Andrews, Jake Shiftlett, Peggy Shiftlett, Jessica Bearden and William Bearden. Memorials: Magnolia Manor Nursing Home, 2001 S. Lee St., Americus, Ga. 31709; Phoebe Sumter Medical Center, 1048 E. Forsyth St., Americus, Ga. 31709 or the Sumter Humane Society, 108 Industrial Blvd., Americus, Ga. 31709.
