Obituary

Rachel Virginia Rogers, age 87, of 4805 Gillionville Rd., Albany, formerly of Americus, died early Sunday morning, September 18, 2011, at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany. A native of Round Hill, Virginia, she was born October 25, 1923, the daughter of the late William Mayo and Lutie Virginia Marcus. Mrs. Rogers was a member of the Avalon United Methodist Church and formerly a member of Lee Street United Methodist Church where she served as a Sunday School Teacher. She also was a pink lady at Sumter Regional Hospital, a tutor at Sumter Elementary School and a member of the railroad auxiliary. Graveside services will be held Wednesday, September 21, 2011, at 2:00 PM, at Sunset Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Tuesday, September 20, from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Greg Hancock Funeral Chapel and at other times the residence of David and Ellen Ratliff, 129 Shaaban Sub. Rd., Plains. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the League of the Good Samaritan, Magnolia Manor, 2001 S. Lee St., Americus, Ga. 31709. Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Gay and Dan Surles of Albany, Ellen and David Ratliff of Plains and Robin and Steve Sharrow of Albany; a son, Grover Wade Rogers of Blairsville; two sisters, Opal Phelps of Greensboro, NC and Jessie Marcus of West Minister, MD; nine grandchildren, Lisa Cannon, Stephen Surles, Will Rogers, Rachel Arnold, Leah Tremblay, Kelly Royston, Jeremy Justice, Lacie Ratliff and Rae DeVane; and seven great grandchildren. Mrs. Rogers was preceded in death by her husband, James Foster Rogers, Sr. and a son Jimmy Rogers. Cemetery: Sunset Memorial Gardens
