Peggy Virginia Varnum, age 77, of 130 Lonnie Lane, died at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital early Sunday morning, November 18, 2012. A native of Thomaston, she was born July 3, 1935, the daughter of the late J.T. Short and Ada Bell Kelley Short Wheeler. Mrs. Varnum was a retired seamstress and was employed by Manhattan Shirt Co. and she also enjoyed watching basketball. Graveside services will be held Wednesday, November 21, 2012 at 11:00 AM at Leslie City Cemetery with Rev. Raymond Smith officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday, November 20, 2012 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Greg Hancock Funeral Chapel and at other times the home of Deborah Legg, 923 Old Andersonville Rd., Andersonville. Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Deborah and Michael Legg of Andersonville, Faye and Ronnie Hatcher of Leslie and Jennifer and Effrem Holbrook of Preston; two sons, Billy Monroe Varnum, Jr. of Leslie and Jimmy Varnum of Americus; two sisters, Elizabeth Plowden of Sandersville and Net Jackson of Perry; three brothers, Bill Short of Milledgeville, Bobby Short of San Antonio, TX and Butch Short of Columbus; ten grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Carol Jackson. Cemetery: Leslie City Cemetery
