Marshall Clinton Welch, age 66, of 273 Upper River Rd., Americus, Georgia died at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center, Saturday, December 10, 2016. A native of Montezuma, he was born March 24, 1950, the son of the late Tommy Clinton and Mattie Lou Burnam Welch of Byromville. Mr. Welch was a member of Byromville Baptist Church and currently attended First Baptist Church in Americus. In his younger years, he was a member of a national champion softball team "Reed Nuts", where he was known all over the world as "Loney Meat" and "Big Marsh." He was an avid walker, golfer and a huge supporter of Southland Academy and the University of Georgia. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandson and was lovingly known by all children as "Poppy." Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 13, 2016, at 1:00 PM at First Baptist Church with Rev. Keith Parks officiating. Pall Bearers will be Arthur Murray, Dan Parker, Travis Parker, Gary Parker, Leroy Bowden, Derreck Burnam, Jack Wood, Jr., and Mike Waldal. Honorary Pall Bearers will be Eric Cawthon, Mike Bullington, Jimmy Lockerman, Jimmy Jordon, Frank Belcher, Steve Austin, Bill Ewing, Freddie Bass, Mark Long, Mike Mock, Ronald Scott, Lynwood McClung, Groves Jeter, Bob Peavy, Jody Hayes, Burton Thomas, Dan Torbert, Joe Hooks, Sparky Reeves, Leon Holloway, Pete Smith, Billy Stubbs, Steve Nelson, Donald Rhodes, and Emory Parker, Jr. Burial will follow at Swearingen Cemetery in Byromville. The family will receive friends at the family residence. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Southland Academy, 123 Southland Rd., Americus, Ga, 31709 or a charity of your choice. Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Susan Parker Welch of Americus; a daughter and son-in-law, Lynsey Welch Williams and Daniel Kelly Williams of Montezuma; a son, Reggie Folsom Welch of Americus; a sister and brother-in-law, Melba and Jack Wood of Cordele; and one grandson, Daniel Marshall Williams. He is also survived by his nieces, Jaclyn Wood of Cordele and Ivy Johnson Armstrong (Cory) of Fair Hope, Al. and his nephews, Jack Wood, Jr. of Cordele, Dan Parker of Cobb, Travis Parker (Mitzi) of Americus, Dakota Johnson of Fair Hope, Al. and Jordan Parker of Americus. Several great-nieces, great-nephews, uncles, aunts, and cousins also survive. Greg Hancock Funeral Chapel is in charge of these arrangements.
