IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Lilyann Parsons
Peterman
September 22, 1935 – May 24, 2024
Lilyann Peterman was called home to be with the Lord Friday, May 24, 2024. She left us unexpectedly after a brief illness in Jacksonville, FL. She was 88.
She was born in Plains September 22, 1935 to George Raymond Parsons and. Arrie Winifred Smith and raised on Felder St in Americus. She was to be the eldest of 3 sisters who preceded her in death, Elizabeth Ledger and Sara Spillers.
Lilyann was highly intelligent, full of integrity, lovely piano player, creative, funny, so caring and loved the Lord.
She attended Americus schools, studied piano and played basketball at AHS. She was an excellent student and began studies at GSW. She married Thomas Leonard Peterman, June 5, 1955. God blessed them uniquely with 2 sets of twins; Greg, Jeff, Mary and Mark. She had fond memories of working for a lawyer group before the first set. She went to Jimmy Carter who was Sumter County Schools Superintendent and taught music classes in Plains. She was a teacher for the Americus School system teaching English and Science.
Tragically, Thomas in 1969 was killed in an car accident and she had to raise 4 young children alone. Somehow her faith sustained her through and she returned to GSW and finished her BS in Education, Summa Cum Laude, without studying. That alone was amazing and she had the same tenacity throughout her life.
We all remember how determined she was, starting at the GSW college library and then owned a Christian bookstore, "The Word Shop".
She settled into her career working as a Technical Librarian for South Georgia Technical College until retirement.
All her life, being a devout Christian, she was a member of First Baptist Church, Leslie Methodist Church, Morningside Methodist Church and then returned back to First Baptist Church in Americus for the remainder of her life. She played the piano, was in the Choir and taught Sunday School, helping however she was needed.
After retirement, she didn't slow down. She swam daily. She served as President of Retired Educators, Treasurer of Americus Adult Literacy Action Inc which helps adults to read.
Later still she moved into Magnolia Manor Pineywood Apartments and was able to spend time reaching out to the community family in times of loss or need. She was loved by many in Americus,
Hard times came again in 2014 when Lilyann was involved in a car accident and seriously injured. From then on she resided in Tallahassee with daughter Mary and son Greg. Although she had many health crises in the last 10 years, we witnessed miraculous progress and recoveries over and over. She was inspirational for all of her health care providers.
Her love for reading led her to the Tallahassee library where she visited a couple of days a week and brought back a box of books each time!
Tragedy struck our family 18 months ago with the sudden passing of Mark Thomas Peterman, 57 and then Jeffrey Stephen Peterman, 65, just 2 months apart. Surviving are Gregory Stewart Peterman and Mary Ann Peterman in Tallahassee, FL.
Lilyann, will be sorely missed but we take comfort in the promise of everlasting life through our Lord Jesus Christ where we know they are all now reunited
She is also survived by 2 grandchildren she loved and was so very proud of; Blake Stephen Peterman, Denver, Colorado and Chandler Renee Peterman, Atlanta and daughters in law, Trudy Morita (Jeff) and Janet Peterman (Mark). She is also survived by Nieces and Nephews.
Nancy and Susan (nee Neylans), Ed, Ray, Janet, Kim (nee Reid), Allan and Lee Ledger, their spouses and numerous Grand Nieces and Nephews.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 1, 2024 in the Chapel of First Baptist church in Americus, GA at 2 pm with Brother Keith Parks and Reverend Wendy Peacock officiating. A Visitation will be held one hour prior to service. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery.
