Larry Tucker, age 77, of Smithville, died Monday, July 26, 2021 at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital. Mr. Tucker was born June 22, 1944 to the late Johnie R. and Elizabeth Scott Tucker in rural Lee County. Larry graduated from Lee Co. High School in 1962 and from Georgia Southwestern in 1965. He began his farming career in 1963 with his mentor, Jack Miller. After becoming a full-time owner/operator of Tucker Farms in 1965, he won many extension service awards for outstanding yields, especially for peanuts. In 1973 he and Phyllis were named Georgia Farm Bureau Outstanding Young Farm Family and in 1974 were named American Farm Bureau Outstanding Young Farmer. Larry served many leadership roles including president of Lee. Co. Farm Bureau, Lee Co. Tax Equalization Board and Development Authority. He was chosen for the '79-'80 class of Leadership Georgia. He was a member and very active in Leslie United Methodist Church. Larry was on the Board of Trustees for Southland Academy, serving as chair for 2 years. Larry was also co-owner of Leslie Auto Parts, Leslie Hardware, Ag Enterprises and Farmers and Merchants Bank, all in Leslie. Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 30, 2021 at 11:00 AM at Leslie United Methodist Church with Rev. Scott Tucker, Rev. Tommy Mason, and Rev. Steve Patton officiating. Burial to follow at Mt. Zion Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Greg Hancock Funeral Chapel on Thursday, July 29, 2021 from 6:00-8:00 PM. Pallbearers include Joseph Tucker, Ben Tucker, Matt Tucker, Rob Douglas, Brian Deriso, Jimmy Webb, Mac Perry, David Miller, and Jon Douglas. Survivors include wife of 55 years Phyllis Tucker, three sons and daughters-in-law Rev. Scott Tucker and Patty of Savannah, Larry Tucker, Jr. and Lety of Newnan, and Johnie Tucker and Laura of Statham; six grandchildren Joseph, Ben, Amy, Matt, Elijah, and Luciana; and brothers-in-law George E. Magee, Ken Magee, and Howard Stanford. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by siblings Betty T. Stanford, Elaine T. Douglas, and Johnie Tucker, Jr. The family suggests memorial contributions to be made to Leslie UMC PO Box 116 Leslie, GA. 31764 or to a charity of your choice.
