LCpl Daniel Gabriel "Gabe" Raney, 21, was killed while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan, Operation Enduring Freedom, in support of the Global War Against Terrorism. He was assigned to Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.LCpl Raney, from Pleasant View, TN, was a 2007 graduate of Sycamore High School in Cheatham County, and was the eldest of Penny Riley's two children. He is survived by his Mother Penny, his brother Luke, and by two stepbrothers and a stepsister.He was a champion wrestler for Sycamore and an avid sportsman who loved rock climbing and mixed martial arts. Raney was also a second-year microbiology major at Austin Peay State University when he decided to join the Marine Corps in October 2008.Family and friends described Gabe as a quiet young man with a good sense of humor who "wanted to make a difference in the world." Public visitation will be held at Greg Hancock Funeral Chapel from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, With Services beginning at 3p.m at the Funeral Home, with burial to follow at the Andersonville National Historic Site in Andersonville, Ga. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in LCpl Daniel Gabriel "Gabe" Raney's name to the American Red Cross, USO or Operation Pal.
