Mrs. Helen Groover Hicks, age 82, of Americus, died Friday, November 20, 2009 at Magnolia Manor Nursing Center. A native of College Park, Ga., Mrs. Hicks was born August 29, 1927, the daughter of the late Calton Wiley Groover and Cora Helen Bryant Groover. Mrs. Hicks was a graduate of Wesleyan College in Macon, Ga., a homemaker and a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Americus. She enjoyed gardening, bridge, golf, painting, reading and classical music. Funeral services will be held Monday, November 23, 2009, at 11:00 AM, at First Baptist Church of Americus with Rev. Keith Parks and Dr. Bob Whitmire officiating. Serving as pallbearers will be Jim Davis, Jim Mushet, Len Hicks, Jay Davis, Sean Singletary, Spencer Singletary, Jack Wintle and Hal Beman. Honorary pallbearers will be the Dorcas Sunday School class and the Grits and Grub Group. Burial will follow at 3:00 PM at Park Hill Cemetery in Columbus, Ga. A visitation will be held Sunday, November 22, 2009, from 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM, at Greg Hancock Funeral Chapel. Survivors include her husband of 61 years, John Marion Hicks of Americus; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Marie Hicks Davis and James Barry Davis of Augusta, Susan Hicks Garbow of Augusta, Beth Hicks Mushet and Jim of Augusta and Joan Hicks Oliver of Conyers; two sisters, Anne Williams of Locust Grove and Jean Dare of Jacksonville, Fl.; two brothers, James Groover of Stone Mountain and Douglas Groover of Dade City, Fl. She is also survived by ten grandchildren. Mrs. Hicks was preceded in death by a daughter, Jean Hicks Clower in 2008.
