Obituary

George Paul Toms, age 81, of 947 Ga. Hwy 30 W, died at his residence Monday, November 14, 2011. A native of Ellaville, Mr. Toms was born August 14, 1930, the son of the late George P. Toms, Sr. and Katie Lou Johnson Toms. Mr. Toms was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church and was a veteran who served in the U.S. Army. He was a retired Peace Officer and a member of the Peace Officers Association of Georgia; past Assistant Chief with the Americus Police Department and past Department Warden of Sumter County Correctional Institute. Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 17, 2011, at 4:00 PM in the chapel of Greg Hancock Funeral Chapel with Rev. Damon Fountain and Rev. William Hall officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Wednesday, November 16, 2011 at Greg Hancock Funeral Chapel from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM and at other times the family residence. Pallbearers include Al Erkhart, Jr., Johnathon Harris, Willie Barwick, Oscar Harbuck, Ronnie Parrish and Wayne Tatum. Honorary pallbearers include the Deacons of Shiloh Baptist Church and members of the Freddie Ward Sunday School Class. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Phoebe Sumter Hospice, 126 E. Furlow St., Americus, Ga. 31709; Children's Miracle Network, Medical Center of Central Georgia, 858 High St., Macon, Georgia 31201-2007; or Gideons International Americus Camp, PO Box 722, Americus, Ga. 31709. Survivors include his wife, Katie Toms of Americus; a son and daughter-in-law, Paul Doug, Sr. and Kathy Toms of Americus; a daughter and son-in-law, Loretta and Ronnie Haselden of Santee, SC; a sister, Martha Kate Harris of Americus; four grandchildren, William R. Masters, Paul D. Toms, Jr. and wife Lelia, Tabitha Toms Johnson and Katie M. Masters; and nine great grandchildren, Ashley, Aaron and Chase Masters, Kaylee and Atalie Johnson, Will and Chet Toms, Lia and Addyson Robinson and a number of nieces and nephews.
