Dennis C. Avera, Jr, 59, of Americus, GA, passed away Wednesday afternoon, November 13, 2013, at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany, GA. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., November 23, 2013, at Greg Hancock Funeral Chapel with Rev. Keith Parks officiating. Mr. Avera was born in Macon County, GA., the son of the late Dennis Calvin Avera, Sr., and Hazel Windham Avera. He graduated from Southland Academy in Americus in 1972 and attended Georgia Southwestern State University. He was a retired insurance agent having owned his own insurance agency for many years. He attended Riverside Kingdom Hall in Brunswick, GA. Mr. Avera was an extraordinarily talented musician and singer. His favorite instruments were the saxophone and piano. However, he never picked up an instrument that he could not play. He traveled over the United States with his own band for a number of years. He loved boating, fishing, casting for shrimp, gardening, and any kind of water activities. Dennis had a big heart and tried to help anyone that he could. Mr. Avera is survived by one son, Dennis Calvin Avera, III, Brunswick, GA; sister, Denise Avera, Jekyll Island, GA; grandson, Tripp O. Avera, FL; fiancé, Virginia "Ginger" Perry, Americus, GA; two aunts, Ann A. Whittemore, Athens, GA, and Tomlyn Avera, Augusta, GA; two uncles, Joel (Bette Jean) Avera, Augusta, GA, and Paden (Maurice) Avera, Lake Blackshear, GA; nephews, Neal (Casey) Raburn and Luke Raburn, Marietta, GA; and a number of cousins and very dear friends.
