Obituary

Charles Harold Smith, age 85, of 117 Lynnview Drive, Americus, died at his residence Wednesday, April 10, 2013. A native of LaGrange, Georgia, he was born February 4, 1928, the son of the late Thomas Marion Smith and Mattie Francis Seckinger Smith. Mr. Smith was a loving and devoted husband and father. He served in the US Air Force for four years and was stationed in Rantoul, Illinois for the duration of his service. He was a University of Georgia graduate with a Bachelors Degree in Agriculture. He retired from Sherwin Williams after 33 years. Mr. Charles has resided in Americus since 1964. He was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church and the Epworth Sunday School class where he served on several committees and the Board there. He was a member of Americus Kiwanis Club where he served as an officer including President and Lt. Governor. He was chosen for the coveted Hixson Award for that organization. Mr. Smith had 50 years of perfect attendance in Kiwanis. He served on the Board of Directors for Sumter EMC, Americus and Sumter County Humane Society, the Wesley Foundation, was a Charter Member of Morningside United Methodist Church, and Chapelwood United Methodist Church. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, April 13, 2013, at 11:00 AM at the chapel of Greg Hancock Funeral Chapel with Rev. Jim Smith and Rev. William Dupree officiating.Graveside services will be held at Hillview Annex in LaGrange, GA at 4:00 PM. Pallbearers include Thomas Holman, Bill Kipp, Jay Cliett, and grandsons; Timothy C. Smith, William C. Register, and Jasper Dirk Nail. Honorary pallbearers include the Americus Kiwanis Club. The family will receive friends Saturday, April 13, 2013 at 10:00 AM at Greg Hancock Funeral Chapel. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the charity of one's choice. Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Rose Eugenia McLain Smith, of Americus; two daughters and son-in-law, Alison S. and Keith Register, and Gail S. Sartain; a son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Karen Smith; two sisters, Jean S. Massie and Julia S. Overcash; a brother, William "Bill" Smith; two sisters-in-law, Polly H. Smith and Margaret M. Fulton; six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth Smith and two brothers, Thomas Smith and Neal Smith. Cemetery: Hillview Annex in LaGrange, GA at 4:00 PM.
