Obituary for Wilfred 'Bill' Gonye

Wilfred “Bill” Gonye, age 82, of Americus formerly of Sasser, died at his residence Wednesday, June 3, 2015. He was born in New Hampshire on September 12, 1932. He joined the Air Force in 1951 and spent 20 years serving his country around the world before retiring August 1, 1971. He worked for the Lillison Corp. for fourteen years and for MCLB for ten years. Mr. & Mrs. Gonye were residents of Sasser, GA for 33 years and loved their town. They retired to Magnolia Manor, Independent Living in Americus where they were enjoying retirement there. Mr. Gonye was of the Catholic faith. Mr. Gonye loved God, his family, the Air Force, his cats and old friends. His ashes will be scattered at sea at a later date, as he wished. Mr. Gonye is survived by his wife of 63 years, Eleanor “Ellie” Butler Gonye of Americus; two daughters and son-in-law, Susan and Arthur Creason of Chattanooga, TN and Julie Gonye of Savannah; a daughter-in-law, Robin P. Gonye of Columbus; one brother, Ret. Col. L.F. Gonye; and two grandchildren, Kate Creason and Andrew Christopher Gonye. Mr. Gonye was preceded in death by his son, Robin C. Gonye and three brothers, Richard Gonye, , Anthony Gonye and Edward Gonye. Memorial services will be held Saturday, June 13, 2015, at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Greg Hancock Funeral Chapel with Rev. Wesley Kaylor, his friend and Pastor of Sasser United Methodist Church, officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 1:00 until 2:00 PM at Greg Hancock Funeral Chapel. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to League of the Good Samaritan, Magnolia Manor, 2001 S. Lee St., Americus, Ga. 31709, Sumter Humane Society, 108 Industrial Blvd., Americus, Ga. 31719 or to Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 66675.
