Obituary for George Wayne Goodroe

Mr. George Wayne Goodroe, 74, stepped from this life into his eternal home August 2, 2018 after a long and hard fought battle with a complex medical condition. A celebration of his life will be held at 3:00 pm, Sunday August 5th at Concord United Methodist Church Highway 30, Americus with Bro. Mike Lawson officiating. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service at the church, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

George was born August 29, 1943 to Luther and Quida Goodroe in Buena Vista, Georgia and spent his childhood in Marion County. He grew up with older siblings, Donald and Myra, and also was big brother to Stanley. He was preceded in death by his parents and also by sister Myra Parker and brother-in-law Whit Parker.

Survivors include wife, Diane Harbuck Goodroe, daughters, Gina LaBorde and Sharon Peterson, sons-in-law Ralph LaBorde and Randy Peterson and two granddaughters, Loclyn LaBorde and Sheridan Peterson. Also surviving are two brothers and sisters-in-law: Donald and Margaret Goodroe; and Stanley and Catherine Goodroe. Other special family members, both living and deceased, include: G.F. and Julia Harbuck, Clayton and Dixie Harbuck, Annette and Zeke Woods, Mary and Bill Ray, Judy and Bill Bell, Valeria and Denny Fender, Billy Lightner, and many nieces and nephews.

George was blessed with a very analytic mind and had a knack for figuring out on his own how things work. This ability was apparent in so many ways and from a very early age. He expanded the wiring of his family home around age 12 and also ran a line from his house to three more in their neighborhood for a phone, giving each a unique ringtone. He was not only interested in electrical applications but loved astronomy and built a telescope from saved carpet roll tubes and mirrors. George rebuilt the engine of a Volkswagen when he was 16. If there was anything that needed work, he could pinpoint the problem and fix it.

His love for music and the guitar was developed at an early age and he would spend hours learning songs in the style of Chet Atkins, his favorite guitar player. He also enjoyed sports and played basketball with his team at Marion County High School before graduating in 1961.

George fell in love and married his high school sweetheart, Diane Harbuck in 1963. Diane remembers vividly the first time George saw her. She definitely noticed him noticing her. At age 19, he was diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia, a blood disease more deadly than leukemia normally fatal within six months at that time. This was the first of many brushes with death during his lifetime. Despite those odds, he and Diane married and later welcomed two daughters, Gina and Sharon.

George spent most of his career in the electrical department of CE Minerals/Mulcoa in Andersonville, Georgia and retired to Douglas in 2011 as the electrical superintendent. He also sang and played guitar with the music group Sweet Water.

Known as an easy-going, kind and gentle man with an off beat sense of humor, George was most known for his powerful love for the Lord and was never hesitant to express that love or what God had done in his life. His testimony was incredible and he encouraged and impacted others with his words. He had experienced a true conversion and gave Glory to the Lord for this. He spoke and also ministered in song with Diane and their musical talents were passed to their daughters as well. They sang together as a family at various services and churches in the South Georgia area over the span of many decades.

Greg Hancock Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
