Obituary for Emma Lougenia Brooks Knight

Emma Lougenia Knight, age 102, of 114 Sullivan Dr., Americus, died at Perfect Care Wednesday, September 28, 2011. A native of Colquitt County, she was born June 20, 1909 the daughter of the late Henry Jackson and Mattie Alice Law Brooks. Mrs. Knight was a member of Central Baptist Church where she joined in 1929. While a member, she was very active in WMU, was a Sunday School teacher, President of Ladies Class and silver tones choir and she and her first husband Dick Carey along with Clarence Graddick were sent from Central Baptist to start Brooklyn Heights Baptist Church. She was a member of John W. Riley, Chapter # 371 of Eastern Star, was a Worthy Matron from March 1954-1955. She dedicated her yearbook to her grandmother, Rebecca Spencer, who was blind. Mrs. Knight was a member of the So-Sew Club which was a neighborhood sewing group. She was employed with Manhatten Shirt Co., The Tog Shop and loved to bake delicious cakes. In 1985 she took a trip with church members to the Holy Land, New England States and Canada. Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 1, 2011, at 1:00 PM at Central Baptist Church with Rev. Hugh DeLoach officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday, September 30, 2011 at Greg Hancock Funeral Chapel from 5:00 until 7:00 PM. Pall Bearers include the Deacons of Central Baptist Church and honorary pall bearers include members of the Kathleen Gardner Sunday School Class and the present teacher of that class, Mrs. Joan Cordell. The family suggest memorial contributions be made to Phoebe Sumter Hospice, P. O. Box 1434, Americus, Ga. 31709. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Dr. Ruth Carey Early and William R. Early of Americus; three grandchildren, Billie and Ruth E. Lomonaco, Dr. Shannon A. and Todd Miller and Michael William Accardi; and five great grandchildren, Brandon Miller, Mathew Miller, Ashleigh Miller, Donovan Accardi and Lorna Accardi. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ottis Cortez “Dick” Carey, May 22, 1956; two sisters, Eva Pearl Westbrooks and Nannie Estell Singletary; three brothers, Ned Tom Brooks, Henry Watson Brooks and Jessie Ralph Brooks; grandfather in War Between States, John e. Ward and Great Uncle John W. Law.
