Obituary for Bette Gatewood Duke

Mrs. Bette Duke, age 82, of 302 Wildwood Circle, died early Tuesday morning, April 21, 2009 at Sumter Regional Hospital. Mrs. Duke was born in Sumter County on February 16, 1927, a daughter of the late William Hawkins Gatewood and Lucile Summerford Gatewood. She was a member of the Junior League, former President of Americus Chamber of Commerce, former President of Georgia Southwestern College Alumni Association, member of Blue Key Honor Society and Kappa Sigma Fraternity House Mother. Mrs. Duke was former owner of Gatewoods Flower Shop.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Thursday, April 23, 2009 at First Baptist Church with Rev. Keith Parks officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery. Asked to serve as pallbearers are Mickey Flowers, Mike Byrd, Alex Belcher, Ray Duke, Hank Flowers and George Hooks. Asked to serve as honorary pallbearers are the Philathia Sunday School Class, Bill Turpin, Charlie Glover, Bill Hurst, Evelyn Belcher, Ann Colston, Bill Loman and Cliff Carswell.
A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 pm, Wednesday, April 22 at Greg Hancock Funeral Chapel. At other times friends may call at the family residence.
Survivors include her husband of sixty-three years, Lewis Duke of Americus; one daughter and son-in-law, Betsy Duke Flowers and Robert of Lebanon, Ohio; one son and daughter-in-law, Ricky Duke and Tami of Americus; four grandchildren, Travis and Karl Flowers and Sara and Walter Duke; two nieces, Becky H. Price and Suzanne H. King and one nephew, Leon Holloway, Jr.
Mrs. Duke was preceded in death by two daughters, Bonnie Diane Duke and Millie Duke and one sister, Margaret Gatewood Holloway.

Visitation:
A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 pm, Wednesday, April 22 at Greg Hancock Funeral Chapel. At other times friends may call at the family residence.
