Allen V. Burroughs

Mr. Allen V. Burroughs, age 80, of 180 Salem Woods Drive, Americus, died on July 24, 2010, at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center. Mr. Burroughs was a native of Banks County GA, born August 25, 1930, the son of the late Lee John and Lou Tisha Burroughs. Mr. Burroughs was a member of Salem United Methodist Church, the Salem Saints-Senior Club, the Black-Hat Reunion (paratrooper), and a veteran of the U. S. Army, with over 21 years service. Mr. Burroughs was the recipient of two Purple Hearts, and the Silver Star for his bravery when his platoon leader and radio operator were shoot in the field and he acted quickly to radio for help and saved his fellow soldiers. After retiring from the U. S. Army he began working with Reeves Construction Company as a paving foreman for 10 years and then worked at the Marine Corp. Logistic Base in Albany as an inspector for 10 years before retiring in 1994.

Mr. Burroughs is survived by his wife, Sally C Burroughs, of Americus, one daughter Barbara Burroughs Hodges, of Columbus, one step-daughter, Connie Saunders, of Americus, one son, Scott Burroughs, of Columbus, and one step-son, Tommy Pratt, of Americus. Also surviving are four sisters, Alice Tanner, of Tifton, Irene Kent, of Nashville, Ga., Vinnie Lee, of Coeuralene Idaho, and Ruth Williams, of Parrottville, TN; Three grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by one sister, Betty Boyd.

Andersonville National Historic Site

The Family will receive friends from 1:00 until service time at the Funeral Home.

Services will be held on Monday, July 26, 2010, at 1:30 PM from the Chapel of Greg Hancock Funeral Chapel
